Now read some things about the South Beach Diet: The South Beach diet is also based on reduced consumption of carb calories, which is more “intense” during the first days, but it does not quite reach the Atkins Diet as far as strict limits are concerned.

It still is too strict, though, for the normal consumer who wants to go on a dieting program. The first phase, which reduces carb intakes the most and does not allow a variety of other foods, is challenging. The suggested South Beach menu provides extremely poor portions of higher carb foods, far less than the average.

Nevertheless, dieters can practically have as much protein food and as many “calorie-less” vegetables as they like. Here are some characteristics of the meals during “Phase 1” of the program: - tomatoes, peanuts, onions and such are restricted - sweet snacks are allowed at a 75 calorie portion per day (much less than a cookie) - lettuce and other green stuff can be consumed without limit.

Conclusion: The South Beach Diet is less strict than the Atkins Diet, but both programs are quite strict regarding carb consumption, which will probably make it more difficult to follow, especially for the “faint-hearted”.

Moreover, both programs seem to go on for life, as there is no end set for dieters and no reference to returning to normal eating ways, with average carbohydrate intakes and less worries about the calories gained. You can gradually take more carbs as you successfully follow each program, but even half a year is not enough to stop counting carb calories – you just have to continue.

Anyone who would think about following one of these diets should make a serious decision about obeying to the rules the selected program would impose. It would be a kiind of a lifetime commitment, contrary to the joys of the yummy carb food served at restaurants and consumed freely.
