Have you ever heard of a "Blood Type Diet"?
This sort of diet is dictated by your own blood type. Diets like this gained popularity when Peter D'Adamo's book, "Eat Right 4 Your Type" was released. This book is continually a best seller. D'Adamo says that a Blood Type Diet will not only cause weight loss, but also helps with allergies and immunity, and makes the dieter healthier all around.
So what exactly is a Blood Type Diet? The majority of human beings have blood type O. For this blood type, a low-carb, high protein (meat and fish, for instance) and low dairy menu is best. D'Adamo prescribes particular foods to avoid; including avacados, brazil nuts and oranges. Lots of exercise is also important.
If you have Blood Type A, you should limit red meat, but eat lots of fish and vegetables. Avoid most dairy, and exercise only lightly.
If you have Blood Type B, you should eat very little chicken or bacon, but eat lots of meat and dairy instead. Some fish is okay. Eat lots and lots of fruits and vegetables.
If you're Blood Type AB, your diet should be a combination of A and B.
Does This Diet Actually Work? D'Adamo says that his book is based on scientific evidence, but maybe it's too soon to decide how accurate this evidence is. Metabolism, as well as a person's sensitivity to sugar and/or insulin could also be important factors in picking out the right diet.
Two people could have very different metabolisms, but still have the exact same blood type. The first person may have a sensitivty to carbs or sugar, but the second person needs high carbs to stay healthy.
This diet may help you lose weight and give other health benefits. But that could just be because it's a healthier diet, not because it has anything to do with blood type. D'Adamo suggests everyone cut down on refined and processed foods. This is good advice for everyone.
The book also suggests low cal diets that will most likely allow anyone of any blood type to lose some weight. "Eat Right 4 Your Type" and other Blood Type Diets encourage a meat and fish diet, and do not suggest you eat grains, potatoes, cereals breads or pasta.
