So when you begin a heart-healthy diet you don’t have to give up your favorite fruits, vegetable or grains. You shouldn’t feel like you are sacrificing your favorite foods when you begin a low-cholesterol diet. One type of food that people are reluctant to sacrifice is meat. It’s true that red meat is not healthy as it contains a lot of cholesterol, but you still have other options. Fish and skinless poultry make great alternatives as long as you remember to trim off any excess fat prior to cooking it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that grilling, broiling, boiling, baking or sautéing are better for you than frying. Eggs are another high-cholesterol food that many people don’t want to give up. But not to worry, you can always prepare your eggs using just the whites or give cholesterol-free egg substitutes a try.
Some great snack ideas when you’re watching your cholesterol include nuts like walnuts and almonds, or some salt-free popcorn and pretzels. There are so many delicious foods that can be good for you so don’t get hung up on what you think you’re missing out on.
If you follow some of these tips and try some new foods, you may find that you’re not sacrificing anything at all. In fact, not only might you find some new favorites, but you’ll be healthier and you’ll feel better about your good eating habits, too.
