<p>The Cabbage Soup diet, also known as the <a href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/being_overweight.html">Mayo Clinic Diet</a>, has been around for years. It is based on the daily consumption of a cabbage soup, which has very few calories, but is very filling. The premise is that the bulky soup will cause the dieter to feel full and be satisfied on a lower number of calories.</p>
<p>In this seven day plan the dieter is encouraged to eat unlimited quantities of cabbage soup prepared according to a specific recipe. Some days only soup is allowed, while on other days the dieter is allowed unlimited quantities of another type of food. On some days that food is bananas and on others it is a different variety of fruit or a selection of fruits.</p>
<p>There are some days when the dieter is allowed an unlimited quantity of rice. This diet creates weight loss through severely <a href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/introducing.html">restricting calories </a>without any concern for proper nutrition. To be healthy the body needs adequate amounts of a variety of nutrients on a daily basis and this diet certainly lacks that balance. The lack of medical supervision in such an unbalanced diet is also of great concern.</p>
<p>In our opinion this diet is not at all a healthy choice and should be avoided. Our opinions of the Rice Diet and the Cabbage Soup Plan can be summarized as follows: While the Rice Diet is medically supervised and might be appropriate for a person who is seriously obese, we would not recommend either of these diets for the average dieter.</p>

<p>Recently, there have been a number of “low-carb” diets developed and popularized as a fast and healthy way to lose weight. Two of the most popular diets are the <strong>Atkins Diet</strong> and the <strong><a href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/fat_loss_guru_3.html">South Beach Diet</a></strong>. A third low-carb diet that is on the market these days is called the <strong>Sonoma Diet</strong>.</p>
<p>Like the Atkins and South Beach diets, the Sonoma diet has a number of phases through which the dieter must progress. This particular diet has three steps, or “waves.” The first phase of the Sonoma diet seems to be very similar to the first phases of the Atkins and South Beach Diets.</p>
<p>This phase is entitled the Induction Phase and involves purging the body of various substances which can inhibit <strong><a href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/introducing.html">weight loss</a></strong>, such as processed foods and sugars. This phase is ten days long and focuses on getting rid of certain types of carbs and fats, as well as other types of foods.</p>

<p>Their second phases focus on bringing various carbs (such as the kind found in fruit) back into the person’s diet. The third and final phase, or wave, of the Sonoma diet begins when the person on the diet reaches the weight for which they were aiming. This phase lasts for the rest of the dieter’s life because it involves keeping and maintaining the goal weight that they have reached.</p>

<p>Now read some things about the South Beach Diet: The <a href="http://thefatlossguru.com/page6.html">South Beach diet </a>is also based on reduced consumption of carb calories, which is more “intense” during the first days, but it does not quite reach the Atkins Diet as far as strict limits are concerned.</p>
<p>It still is too strict, though, for the normal consumer who wants to go on a <a title="dieting program" href="http://thefatlossguru.com/fat_loss_guru_3.html">dieting program</a>. The first phase, which reduces carb intakes the most and does not allow a variety of other foods, is challenging. The suggested South Beach menu provides extremely poor portions of higher carb foods, far less than the average.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, dieters can practically have as much protein food and as many “calorie-less” vegetables as they like. Here are some characteristics of the meals during “Phase 1” of the program: - tomatoes, peanuts, onions and such are restricted - sweet snacks are allowed at a 75 calorie portion per day (much less than a cookie) - lettuce and other green stuff can be consumed without limit.</p>
<p>Conclusion: The South Beach Diet is less strict than the Atkins Diet, but both programs are quite strict regarding carb consumption, which will probably make it more difficult to follow, especially for the “faint-hearted”.</p>
<p>Moreover, both programs seem to go on for life, as there is no end set for dieters and no reference to returning to normal eating ways, with average carbohydrate intakes and less worries about the calories gained. You can gradually take more carbs as you successfully follow each program, but even half a year is not enough to stop <a title="counting carb calories" href="http://thefatlossguru.com/introducing.html">counting carb calories </a>– you just have to continue.</p>
<p>Anyone who would think about following one of these diets should make a serious decision about obeying to the rules the selected program would impose. It would be a kiind of a lifetime commitment, contrary to the joys of the yummy carb food served at restaurants and consumed freely.</p>
<p>In our opinion, none of the programs is practical enough for the average consumer. Most people do not want to bind themselves and force themselves to do things that do not seem to be at least fun. Therefore you are advised not take any of them if you are not over-the-top determined.</p>

<p>When talking to dieters, they usually want to know two things. First, they ask what the right portion size for food is. Second, they want to know how many daily calories are necessary for <strong><a title="rapid weight loss" href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/">rapid weight loss</a></strong>. You’ve probably noticed that a lot of fad diets come out with nifty little charts that put you on a calorie guideline.</p>
<p>They develop this chart with bodyweight, height, and sometimes activity level. Weight loss counselors work using a similar kind of calorie count guideline as well. They usually advise their overweight clients to adopt a certain daily calorie limit based on factors like weight, height, and activity level.</p>
<p>If a typical overweight person goes in to a <a title="weight loss" href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/being_overweight.html"><em>weight loss</em> </a>counselor describing themselves as “active,” they’ll probably be told to stick to 2,000 calories a day and they’ll lose weight. However, this is a preposterous way to lose weight, and we’ll tell you why.</p>
<p>Everybody has metabolisms that vary widely. No one’s metabolism is quite like another’s. So putting a one-size-fits all calorie intake limit on a person solely based on weight, height, and activity level just doesn’t make sense. There isn’t even a necessary relationship between metabolism and activity level.</p>
<p>Lots of people are very active but still overweight, and the reason could be simply that their metabolism is slower to act. For instance, consider two people who both weigh 173 pounds and do the same amount of activity daily. One person may have twice the metabolic rate of the other, just because of genetics. Identical heights and weights really mean nothing in regards to what their metabolism is.</p>
<p>So following a rigid calories-per-day guideline that doesn’t account for your specific metabolism is wasting your time. There’s also a second reason why it isn’t productive for weight loss. Your body doesn’t count days when <strong><a title="burning calories" href="http://www.thefatlossguru.com/introducing.html">burning calories</a></strong>. It burns calories at meals. Your body doesn’t care what time the clock says, it just burns calories throughout the day (and night) as you eat them.</p>
<p>This occurs regardless of the time. Even if you faithfully stick with a daily caloric guideline, you won’t lose weight. A daily calorie count doesn’t tell you when to eat, and that’s really important for weight loss too. You had to distribute those calories evenly throughout the day if you want to lose weight. This means more than the standard three meals a day.</p>
<p>For weight loss you need to eat more frequently, and eat less at each sitting. Stuffing yourself with three large meals and no snacks in between isn’t doing your body any favors. You need more than three meals a day, and each should be small and focused on appropriate portion size. Note that this has nothing to do with counting calories.</p>
